Physical Accessibility
Although the benefits of physical accessibility extend beyond compliance, it is important to understand what is required by law.
Physical Accessibility
Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) you cannot exclude a person intentionally or not from participating because of a disability.
“Subpart C—Accessibility
104.21 Discrimination prohibited.
No qualified handicapped person shall, because a recipient’s facilities are inaccessible to or unusable by handicapped persons, be denied the benefits of, be excluded from participation in, or otherwise be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity to which this part applies.”
In addition to the building and campus, areas in which accessibility must be provided may include, but are not limited to:
- Parking lots (handicapped parking spaces)
- Entrances/exits
- Fire alarms/emergency exits
- Conference rooms and shared work space
- Desks and personal work space
- Hallways and stairwells
- Elevators
- Restrooms
- Cafeterias
