Serra Victoria Bothwell Fels (b. 1982 Knoxville, TN) is the Windgate artist-in-residence for Fall 2019. She is known for site-responsive installations that embed into pre-existing architecture, visually stretching between folkloric and sci-fi alternative realities. These sculptural outcroppings subvert mundane expectations of place and transform them into the out-of-ordinary, exploring how environments can shift perceptions of being. Where are the seams between real and imagined environments, and how can one become the other? This “architecture-of-becoming” investigates institutional boundaries as material with space as a fulcrum, pushing towards a kind of speculative magical feminism. Originally trained as a social psychologist at Stanford University, SVBF received her MFA from Columbia University and shows widely, including The Palais de Tokyo (Paris), The Clocktower Gallery (NYC), Pioneer Works (Brooklyn), University of Wisconsin (Oshkosh), Fischer Landau Center (Queens), and Smack Mellon (Brooklyn). She has been based in Brooklyn for nearly a decade and is represented by Catinca Tabacaru Gallery (NYC).
