Preferred Name, Pronouns, and Gender in the DLE
Preferred Name: Preferred Name is made up of two fields, Preferred First Name and Preferred Last Name. These fields are set in Brightspace based on the data feeds from each individual campus Student Information System (SIS) sending either one or both of these fields. If a student is enrolled at multiple campuses, updates will made based on the last set of data that is send making it important for all campuses to send the same Preferred Name information to ensure consistency. This would require students to provide the same Preferred Name information to each campus they are active with. When a Preferred Name is set in Brightspace, it will override the user’s Legal Name in all areas where the name is displayed (User search, Classlist, Gradebook, Profile, etc.).
Pronouns: Pronouns can be set by students and faculty within Brightspace and are not provided by individual campuses through their Student Information System (SIS) . Brightspace does not validate what pronouns a student or faculty sets for themselves but periodic audits are conducted to ensure inappropriate pronouns are not being used.
Gender: Brightspace does not collect this information.
