backstory: Open Classroom

Amid the sorrow and frustration brought by the pandemic and the circumstances it creates, at the Neuberger we have found some unexpected opportunities for collaboration. One such opportunity occurred earlier this semester.

Back in the beginning of September I mentioned in backstory that, given the need for additional space on campus to spread out our classes and fact that we were closed for the construction of a new roof, we were using our galleries as classroom space. Well, in partnership with Liam Joynt and his Voice II class, we created a really nice project to which I want to introduce you today.

According to our Associate Curator of Education for Academic Programs, Kristen Lindberg, “We are always brainstorming ways to join Purchase curriculum and the museum’s resources, and this semester, while certainly challenging, gave us an opportunity to rethink how to do that while working remotely. This is a new kind of product for us that falls inside of our Open Classroom program, and Professor Joynt and his students were on board from the beginning and a total pleasure to work with. The students have been delivering beautiful video narrations of artwork they chose from our permanent collection, each read with their own personal style. Because of the project’s technical nature, we had to rethink details during the process, and the class was on top of every step. Along with being a rewarding project in itself, this has opened us up to other digital options going forward, and, as always, we are grateful to the Conservatory of Theatre Arts for being such great collaborators.”

The project launches next week, but look here for a sneak preview.

Be safe, be well.
