backstory: Origin Story

Did you know that when the Neuberger opened its doors back in 1972, it didn’t open as a museum?
Nope. It opened as classroom space, the library, faculty offices…. Why? Because when Purchase College opened its doors to its first students that year there weren’t yet any other finished buildings on campus and they needed to put people somewhere.

Flash forward forty-eight years and the college needs to put people somewhere again … this time because of social distancing requirements. Since we’re closed right now, we’re able to pitch in. Earlier this week we hosted in our South Gallery an acting class which will continue to meet twice a week at the Neuberger for much of the semester. And more acting classes will be coming over the course of the semester as will a music class.

Who would have thought the pandemic would bring us back to our origins in this way.
