Students Attend National STEM Conference

Professors Linda Bastone, Karen Singer-Freeman, Joe Skrivanek, and Mark Jonas, and two School of Natural and Social Science staff members, Shaina Dymond and Julianna Campos Lopes, accompanied eleven students to Indianapolis, IN from November 14–17 for the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS).

These students have conducted original STEM research with Purchase College faculty members. During the conference, over 2,000 students from over 350 colleges and universities participated in poster and oral presentations in twelve STEM disciplines.

The students participated in workshops, lectures, and networking events to explore opportunities in STEM research. The students’ research and conference attendance was funded by National Institutes of Health (NIH) Bridges to the Baccalaureate and MARC U*STAR grants.

Eight of the students presented their research and two Bridges scholars, Tara Clark and Lilibeth Mendoza, were recognized with awards for outstanding presentations. The community college students are preparing for transfer to four year schools and the Purchase College students are currently preparing applications for summer research opportunities and PhD programs.
