Angelica Diaz
Angelica is a Literature major. She will be presenting her senior project titled “Pleasure and Liberation: From Frederick Douglass to Summer Walker.” Using work from Zora Neale Hurston, Alice Walker, Frederick Douglass, and Summer Walker, her project traces the stereotypes The Bitch, The Baby Mama, and The Hoe back to chattel slavery and compares them to contemporary novels and songs. She discusses the effects of these stereotypes on Black women’s sexual autonomy and systemic presence while offering how Black femme artists profit from these tropes and liberate themselves from the lasting effects of enslavement.
