Elizabeth Hyman ’11
Elizabeth Hyman ’11 is a Holocaust historian and author who serves as the Digital Content Manager for the The American Jewish Historical Society at the Center for Jewish History in New York City.
Hyman has a deal with Harper Perennial to publish a work of narrative history, The Girl Bandits of the Warsaw Ghetto: a Female Military History of the Warsaw Ghetto and its Uprising, in 2025.
Raised in New Paltz, New York, the granddaughter and great-granddaughter of Polish Jews who fled that country in 1939 and ultimately made their way, as refugees, to the United States, Hyman began her graduate work in the University of Maryland-College Park’s joint History and Library Science Master’s degree program in 2011.
Hyman’s thesis topic was “‘An Uncertain Life in Another World’: German and Austrian Jewish Refugee Life in Shanghai, 1938-1950”
In March 2011, she created a history blog hosted on Tumblr called HISTORICITY (was already taken) to discuss complex, esoteric, weird, and overlooked historical concepts in a manner accessible to a general readership. Today, she has more than 120,000 followers on Tumblr alone. Her pieces about women and the Holocaust are some of the most popular on her blog.
In June 2022, Hyman presented the paper “Tema Schneiderman and Tossia Altman: Voices from Beyond the Grave” at the Heroines of the Holocaust: New Frameworks of Resistance International Symposium at Wagner College.
Later that summer, she was invited to give a talk titled “Women and the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising” at the National World War II Museum’s 15th International Conference on World War II, which she presented on November 18, 2022.
On April 14, 2023, Hyman delivered the keynote address at the Jewish Federation of Dutchess County’s Yom HaShoah Program in Honor of the 80th Anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising: “Women of the Warsaw Ghetto.”
