Listen in as Jon Kessler, Tom Burckhardt, and Cassandra Hooper–all artists influenced and guided by the late Irving Sandler–share their memories of the beloved art historian, author, and distinguished professor at Purchase College.

Moderated by Tracy Fitzpatrick, Director of the Neuberger Museum of Art and co-curator of the exhibition Irving Sandler: Points of View, the conversation explores the group’s memories of Sandler, his extensive relationships with artists, and his sweeping narratives that offered a picture Abstract Expressionism and contemporary American art seen from the inside out.

ABOUT THE PANEL
Jon Kessler is known for his chaotic kinetic installations that critique our image-obsessed, surveillance-dominated world. Kessler received his BFA from Purchase College in 1980. Kessler has been exhibited in notable venues such as the Whitney Museum of Art, Gagosian Gallery and MOMA P.S. 1 and received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1996. He currently teaches at Columbia University and works in his studio in Brooklyn.

Tom Burckhardt is known for exploring the artistic process and subverting the boundary between representation and abstraction. He received his BFA from Purchase College in 1986. He is the recipient of a 2009 Guggenheim Fellowship, 2010 Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant, and a 2005 Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant.

Cassandra Hooper received her MFA from Purchase College and is currently a Professor of Printmaking/Art of the Book. Her prints, books and collaborative projects can be found in the collections of the Harvard College Library, The Whitney Museum of American Art, The Walker Museum, and others across the country and around the world.

Tracy Fitzpatrick is director of the Neuberger Museum of Art and an associate professor of art history in the School of Humanities at Purchase College. She is responsible for the museum‘s first in-depth study of the Roy R. Neuberger collection, When Modern Was Contemporary: The Roy R. Neuberger Collection, and has written, curated, and taught widely on American art of the 20th century.

Irving Sandler: Points of View was organized by the Neuberger Museum of Art at Purchase College, SUNY and co-curated by Tracy Fitzpatrick, Director of the Neuberger Museum, with Karen Wilkin, independent curator and art critic. Generous support was provided by Sandy and George Gottlieb; additional support was provided by the Friends of the Neuberger Museum of Art and the Purchase College Foundation.

The exhibition closed on December 23, 2018.
