Open Classroom: Sculptural Choreography

Open Classroom: Sculptural Choreography
Stairway West Gallery

Guided by Assistant Professor Yael Levitin Saban, dance students translate the shapes, volumes, and static or dynamic qualities of the artworks on view in Sculptural Choreography into original movements.

Academic museums play a critical role in expanding on the curriculum of their parent colleges and universities. All too often, however, the rich collaborations that happen inside academic museums occur behind closed doors. The Open Classroom at the Neuberger Museum of Art makes visible some of our collaborations with SUNY Purchase students and faculty, featuring projects that move beyond the scope of the traditional classroom, through the study of and engagement with works of art.

This iteration features a partnership with the SUNY Purchase Conservatory of Dance. Guided by Assistant Professor Yael Levitin Saban, dance students translate the shapes, volumes, and static or dynamic qualities of the artworks on view in Sculptural Choreography into original movements.

Saban will film these performances and integrate them into short videos, which will be added to the exhibition as they are completed. This project transforms the gallery into a dynamic “dance-lab” environment where students from any discipline can perform, experiment, and see their work come to life.
