backstory50: Full Circle
As we enter our last month of the 50th anniversary backstories, I find myself shifting from a celebration of the Museum’s rich and robust history to focus on its promising future.
You’ve heard me talk all year about the incredible people who have made the Museum what it is today: from Roy R. Neuberger to our patrons and our Friends. Now, I am so excited to announce that world-renowned artist Fred Wilson—who earned his BFA at Purchase and graduated with the new College’s first four-year class in 1976—has joined the Board of the Friends of the Neuberger Museum of Art.
Fred has maintained his connection with the Museum over the years. His solo exhibition, Fred Wilson, was on view at the Neuberger in spring 2017. In February 2024, the Neuberger and the Purchase College Global Black Studies and Media Studies programs launched The Fred Wilson Lectures in Global Black Studies to honor his achievements and those of other Black makers and thinkers who shape our creative and cultural landscapes; and in April he was named our 2024 Passionate Artist during the Museum’s Golden Anniversary Celebration.
Today’s 50th anniversary thank-you goes to Fred and all the dedicated Friends—past and present—who keep us strong and focused on our mission to champion those who make art, engage with art, and discover meaning through art.
