backstory50: Richard Pettibone Paints the Rickey Collection
Today, I reached into the archives to find one of my first backstory blog posts written in January 2019 when we were installing Miniaturizing Modernism: Richard Pettibone Paints the Rickey Collection.
I’ve mentioned in a few recent posts about the George and Edith Rickey Collection of Constructivist Art, which is one of the five primary groups of art that represented the Museum’s collection during our inaugural exhibition in 1974.
Miniaturizing Modernism: Richard Pettibone Paints the Rickey Collection is a unique exhibition that is two shows in one – it features the original artwork collected by the Rickeys and donated to the Museum, and also showcases smaller versions of the works by Richard Pettibone that were commissioned by the Rickeys as mementos of their own collection. A small comparison of the Rickey collection and paired Pettibone paintings is now on view as part of the 1974-2024 project of The Making of a Museum: 50 Years anniversary exhibition.
