backstory50: Participatory Art
At the Neuberger we like to produce exhibition projects where everyone can participate in the art making.
Liza Lou’s Color Field (2016) was a project that engaged hundreds of people in building the large, physical final form over the course of time. Two of our most recent such endeavors are the 2022 exhibition of Yoko Ono’s Mend Piece (Andrea Rosen Gallery, New Yok City version), 1966/2015—learn more about the project in our latest Inside the NEU profile—and last year’s performance art show, Hard Return: 9 Experiments for this Moment that incorporated visitors in daily, scheduled performances.
The 1974—2024 gallery of The Making of a Museum: 50 Years exhibition showcases even more examples of how the NEU has taken on participatory and instruction art with artists such as Teresa Margolles and exhibition projects such as SOUNDINGS and FluxFest.
Today’s 50th anniversary thank-you goes to Bonnie and Bob Romano for their support of Yoko Ono’s Mend Piece project and, especially, to Bonnie for her work as Vice Chair of the Board of the Friends of the Neuberger Museum of Art. We are so grateful to be in partnership with them. Their devotion to the organization and belief in philanthropy are exemplary and so appreciated.
