backstory50: The largest Edward Hopper

It’s true. Barber Shop (1931) is the largest work Edward Hopper ever painted.

No, really. It’s fantastic. It’s been sparking the imagination of generations of visitors to the Museum … and it’s almost always on view here because we don’t lend it out anymore. Nope. Never. Read why here.

Our Hopper is currently on view in the South Gallery as part of the 1974-2024 project in The Making of a Museum: 50 Years show. Come see it for the first time, or come see it again if you’re a devotee.

Today’s 50th anniversary thank you goes to Stacey Oestreich for her generosity in support of our golden anniversary and her contributions as a member of the Friends of the Neuberger Museum of Art Board.

I’d also like to thank Alison Lowey, our assistant registrar. Stewarding our collection, particularly when tough decisions like touring retirement have to be made, often fall to our registration team. Ali just celebrated her 26th anniversary with the Neuberger. She is a valuable member of our staff and I’m grateful to her for all that she does for the Museum.
