backstory50: The biggest gallery around

I hope you will all be joining us next month for our 50th anniversary celebration events.  When we gather in the Theater Gallery on Saturday evening, April 13, to honor Janet Langsam, Fred Wilson, and Lois Bregstein, surrounded by the site-specific painting, Threnody, we will be in one of the largest exhibitions spaces in the region.

We don’t have formal research on this, but when I think of large-scale spaces in the area that are devoted to the exhibition of art, I really can’t think of others that are larger. Can you?  (Dia Beacon, with equivalent space, opened in 2003.)

Find out more about the Theater Gallery—and see a selection of images from exhibitions that have filled it—in this article by Associate Preparator Jose Smith.

Today’s 50th anniversary thank-you goes to Jose for researching this story and choosing this great image of the Theater Gallery. He was a student in the Purchase College School of Art+Design before becoming a member of the Museum staff. I’m so grateful to Jose for his longtime devotion to the Museum.
