The TLTC has partnered with SUNY Instructional Design Services to once again offer a series of webinars for instructors on how to use Brightspace. Details about the first three webinars are below.
Introduction to Brightspace & SUNY Online Teaching ID Drop-in Support Services
This webinar will provide an introduction and overview of the new SUNY Digital Learning Environment (DLE), Brightspace. The session will also serve as a kick-off for the SUNY Online Drop-in Services, now available to all SUNY Purchase faculty.
Webinar participants will be provided with an overview of the SUNY Online Drop-in Services: including how to access the service, what you can expect, and a preview of the upcoming Spring 2024 weekly focused-topic webinar sessions.
Participants will then be guided through the Brightspace interface, useful terminology, and will learn about features in Brightspace that can assist to optimize the presentation of content for efficiency, effectiveness, engagement, accessibility, and mobile devices.
Participants will view demonstrations on how to:
Navigate and update the course homepage (and all related links) in Brightspace;
Set up course preferences and notifications;
Create new course modules and mobile-ready course pages;
Upload new course content that is optimized for accessibility;
Use various Brightspace HTML optimized page elements, accordion, tabs, etc.;
Create links to external resources;
Embed videos;
Use the communication tools in Brightspace.
Import zipped course backups from Moodle.
Rob Piorkowski is an expert online instructional designer, a fellow online instructor with 15+ years teaching online, and an experienced online faculty trainer for SUNY Online. He is also a lead SUNY DLE trainer with extensive expertise in training, and in the D2L Brightspace platform.
This webinar will provide an overview of how to communicate and enhance interaction and engagement in the Brightspace platform. Participants will gain an understanding of best practices in building class communities, and view demonstrations of various communication tools in Brightspace to enhance online learner engagement and community. This session will provide all the information necessary to ensure that your online communications and interactions are optimized for the Brightspace environment.
Participants will:
Review various tools for communication in the Brightspace platform.
Review notifications, email, settings, and customizations and personalizations.
View a demonstration of Intelligent Agents in Brightspace for a variety of purposes including personalization.
Receive an overview of the Check Progress Indicators, how it works, and suggestions for use including, check marks, status bar on module tiles, bookmark features, and using the settings.
Receive an overview of Class Progress - to view student interactions.
Discuss online interaction and discussion design including:
Grading discussions/grade by post.
Social Interaction discussion forums.
Review limitations of the Pulse app for mobile devices.
Receive an overview of creating and managing attendance using Registers in Brightspace.
Review the use of the Activity Feed in Brightspace.
With a basic understanding of the features and functionality in the Brightspace platform to support communication and interaction, participants will have all the basic information needed to enhance online engagement and build and support a sense of online class community in their online course Brightspace environment.

This webinar will provide an overview of the features and functionality in Brightspace to support the teaching process, as well as managing course-related activities.
Participants will view demonstrations on how to:
interact with students using announcements, activities feed, discussion forums, etc.,
create and manage attendance using Registers,
setup the Brightspace Grade Book, understand how it works including the three views and Setup Wizard,
copy course components and reuse and confirm copied Grade Book settings,
view the default settings in the Brightspace Grade Book, and choose from the available options to set up their own Grade Book including percentage/points, display for students, weighting, ungraded items, etc.,
grade student submissions, review the workflow of the grading process,
mark up attachments submitted by students,
provide multiple forms of feedback to students, and
use rubrics in the grading process.
