SUNY OER Services Open Textbook Library

As you plan courses for upcoming semesters, remember that you can adopt open textbooks from the extensive library available from SUNY OER Services, either as primary texts replacing commercial textbooks for your courses, or as supplemental materials.

  • These textbooks are open educational resources, meaning you and your students can retain, reuse, revise, remix, and redistribute them.
  • SUNY is covering the modest licensing costs for these texts from Carnegie Mellon’s Open Learning Initiative (OLI), Lumen Learning, and other sources, so they are free to you and your students.
  • The OLI texts and Lumen Waymaker texts include embedded self-checks, problems, animations, and other assessments; Lumen OHM texts have extensive homework management tools.
  • All texts in the SUNY library have been vetted to meet digital accessibility standards.
  • As was the case for our Moodle system, all of these texts can be added to your Brightspace course spaces as we switch to the new system for the fall.
  • Your students have access to these texts from day one of your courses, promoting student success and retention.

Clicking on the listing for any of the open textbooks in the SUNY OER Services library brings you to a landing page for that text, with links to explore the content and learning outcomes for the text, and directions for adopting the text for your course. Texts you adopt will be added to your Moodle or Brightspace courses as a series of resource items, allowing you to select what materials you want to use, easily reorder content for different sections of your course, and mix & match materials from multiple textbooks as appropriate.

2023 SUNY OER Services Impact Grants Program

In addition, SUNY is once again providing funding to promote OER adoption, through a grant application process. The message from SUNY Provost-in-charge Sandvik announcing this program is copied below. You can find more details at the OER Impact Grants Program website.
