backstory: Epic
For those of you who are not already familiar with both works, the musical composition was completed in 1940 while Messiaen was imprisoned in a Nazi POW camp. More than thirty years later, Cleve Gray painted Threnody’s 28 massive panels to express his anguish over the tragedy of the Vietnam War. Both epic artworks—musical and visual—share a focus on humanity’s spiritual and emotional healing.
Thanks to the generous support provided by Friends Board Member O. Anthony (Tony) Maddalena, the concert is free but advance registration is requested.
