backstory: Epic

I want to make sure you know about an event we have coming up on July 17 at 4pm. The Music from Copland House Ensemble is coming back once again to perform Oliver Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time in our Theater Gallery surrounded by Cleve Gray’s monumental painting Threnody. This is our fourth collaboration.

For those of you who are not already familiar with both works, the musical composition was completed in 1940 while Messiaen was imprisoned in a Nazi POW camp. More than thirty years later, Cleve Gray painted Threnody’s 28 massive panels to express his anguish over the tragedy of the Vietnam War. Both epic artworks—musical and visual—share a focus on humanity’s spiritual and emotional healing.

Thanks to the generous support provided by Friends Board Member O. Anthony (Tony) Maddalena, the concert is free but advance registration is requested.
