backstory: Gleaning from the collection

The Neuberger has an extraordinary collection. I’ve created shows from it many times. I often write about it—works I haven’t seen before, or in a while, or that have amazing stories.
When the pandemic hit, we and almost all of our peers had to think closely about what we would do with our exhibition calendars. We canceled and postponed projects. Outgoing and incoming loans stranded around the world scared us. We didn’t know when we would reopen and with what.

Those of us fortunate to have fantastic collections started looking even more deeply at how to exercise those collections. What you will see on view in the museum’s galleries this summer and into the fall is all from our permanent collection.

Our NEU Picks project, for example, is comprised entirely of the works that museum staff and volunteer educators said they loved the most. Lesley Dill’s Rush, Color and Motion, our upcoming fall shows, are all drawn from our amazing collection.
