backstory: Close Contact

Today, I thought I’d stick with last week’s theme and share with you another interesting article on art and the 1918 Flu Pandemic. The piece was published earlier this month in Artforum by my dear friend and colleague Michael Lobel.
In the essay, Michael addresses, among other things, the ways in which “observers have generally had a difficult time tracking the impact of the 1918–19 pandemic on the visual arts, in part because that has generally meant trying to find it made visible in actual works…” Artists can be very subtle and adept in the ways in which they treat particular themes, and the 1918 Flu Pandemic appears to be no exception.
