backstory: Firsts

Generally, I’m pretty skeptical of “firsts.” Even when I was a student and a teacher would say to me that “this was the first time something happened,” I’d think to myself “but how do you know it was really the first time.” After all, we don’t know what we don’t know. But here’s an actual first…
On view right now we have a show dedicated to looking at the influence of Pier Paolo Pasolini on the art of the Americas. One of the most exciting things about the project is that we are displaying many of the costumes designed by Farani that were used in his films. According to Patrice Giasson, curator of the exhibition, “We were lucky to get them. It’s the very first time that the costumes have been shown outside of Europe.”

How did we get so lucky as to have them on view? Well, not only because the concept of the show was strong, but also because, as admitted to Patrice by director of Farani, Luigino Piccolo, when Patrice asked if we could borrow them, he wrote to him in Italian. It gave Luigino faith in our seriousness and our commitment to the project.
