backstory: Remembering Margot

We just opened a really special project in our Open Classroom, the space in the museum in which we collaborate on innovative projects with our faculty and students.
This particular project is near and dear to our hearts. As our Associate Curator of Education for Academic Programs, Kristen Lindberg describes it:

“Though our Open Classroom projects always connect to Purchase College in one way or another, this one has a personal tie: a tribute to artist, mentor, and Professor Emerita of Art+Design Margot Lovejoy, who passed away last August at the age of 88. Lovejoy famously expanded her printmaking practice into digital and time-based mediums, and was an internet art pioneer in the ’90s, as well as a founding professor of the New Media department at Purchase.

Kristin Lovejoy, Margot’s daughter and a Purchase alum herself, loaned us work to accompany the artist’s print we have in our collection, and Professor Cassandra Hooper, a former student of Margot’s, selected work by other artists to complement her practice. Watching Casey carefully protect the artist’s legacy during this process, it was clear how much Margot meant to her. When Kristin came to see the installation, the project felt complete; she filled the space with Margot herself, with stories, openness and positivity.”

Thank you Margot, for all you did for so many at Purchase College.
