backstory: Where in the World is the Neuberger?

Right in our own backyard.

On view for another week and a half, Summer with the Averys [Milton | Sally | March] at the Bruce Museum in Greenwich, CT, runs until September 1, 2019 and features several paintings from the Neuberger’s extensive holdings of works by Milton Avery.  Roy R. Neuberger collected Avery extensively, purchasing his first work directly from the artist.

“On a snowy day in January 1943, I visited Milton Avery’s studio, which was also his home, on the fourth floor of a walk-up building in Greenwich Village…. Milton and his wife Sally were very welcoming and we had a grand time. I knew a little about his work from the few paintings I had seen, but now I saw a lot of pictures in the studio that I liked enormously.”

The purchase Roy made that day was a picture of Gaspe in Quebec where he and his wife Marie had honeymooned.  You can see the painting in the Bruce show.
