backstory: Thanks, Tom.

This Friday is Purchase College’s Commencement, a special one because the class of 2019 will be the last to have their degrees conferred upon them by Thomas J. Schwarz, who is concluding 17 years as president of the College.

Almost 15 years ago, Tom gave me my start at the College. It was at his urging that a joint appointment between the Neuberger and the Art History program was created, the first of its kind at Purchase, to try and better integrate the Museum into the curriculum of the campus.  As a professor, curator, chief curator, and director, I’ve tried to always follow that mandate. I hope I’ve done the kind of work you imagined, Tom. Thanks for the job and for 17 years of your leadership at the College.
