Dormitories: Big Haus, Crossroads, and Farside

This project addressed the exterior envelope of the building, by performing masonry repairs and replacement of doors and windows on all three buildings.

Project Overview

The original u-shaped student dormitories, designed by the architectural firm Gwathmey-Siegel, and referred to as Big Haus, Crossroads, and Farside, suffers from a number of exterior envelope issues ranging from leaks to masonry deterioration.

The College hired the architectural firm Superstructures to investigate these issues and develop at report which outlined the various problems and set a schedule for repairs based on the most urgent needs. It was determined that in order to address these issues and limit the impact to the buildings occupants, the project would have to be done in three separate phases, with major portions of the work occurring during the summer months.

The first phase of the project started in 2010 and focused on the exterior areas most in need of repairs. This included the replacement of a number of windows on both Big Haus and Crossroads as well as exterior masonry repairs to help stop active leaks that both buildings were suffering from. Additionally, the existing walkway between Crossroads and Farside that leads to the East 3 parking lot was repaired and updated lighting added.

The second phase of work focused on the remaining windows, doors, and masonry restoration needed at both Big Haus and Crossroads. Additionally, select areas of the plaza surrounding the Quad were removed and replaced to install new waterproofing to protect the lower level of the buildings, as well as preparing the exterior entrance doors for future card reader access.

The third phase focused on Farside. All of the buildings’ exterior doors, windows, and entries we replaced, alone with extensive masonry repairs. The loading dock was also replaced.
