Room Change Process

Residential and Student Life (RSL) supports a safe and positive residential experience. If you are experiencing an issue with your room or roommate, there is a formal process for requesting a room change.

Start with your Residence Coordinator

Before requesting a room change, you must first speak with your Residence Coordinator (RC). RCs can help address concerns and explain next steps.

Timing

  • No room moves are allowed during the first two weeks of the semester.
  • No room moves are allowed during the last two weeks of the semester.
  • Requests are considered only during the approved period in between.
  • Emergency moves may be approved outside these dates at RSL’s discretion.

Room Change Options

After your initial housing assignment, you may request a change in one of two ways:

1. Standard Room Change Request

  • Use this option if you want to move into any available space.
  • Email RSL@purchase.edu to submit your request.
  • Requests are not guaranteed and depend on availability and eligibility.
  • Do not move until you receive written confirmation.

2. Room Swap

  • Use this option if you and another student want to exchange rooms.
  • Both students must email RSL@purchase.edu to request the swap.
  • Swaps are not guaranteed and require approval.
  • Moving without approval may result in a fine.

Step by Step Guide

  1. Speak with your RC about concerns or reasons for a move.
  2. Email RSL@purchase.edu with your request (change or swap).
  3. Wait for an official confirmation before moving
  4. Follow more instructions received via Purchase College email.

Key Notes

  • Room change requests are not guaranteed. Approval is at the discretion of Residential and Student Life and dependent on availability and eligibility.

  • Do not move until you receive confirmation — unauthorized moves can lead to fines or housing violations

  • In cases involving health or safety (e.g. documented health need, facilities emergency, etc.), an RC or other staff may provide a temporary or emergency room change.
