Ellie Houghtaling ’19

Ellie Quinlan Houghtaling ’19 is an associate writer covering national politics on the breaking news desk at The New Republic.

She previously worked on the breaking news desk at The Daily Beast, where she began as an intern soon after graduating with an MS from Columbia Journalism School’s Toni Stabile Center for Investigative Journalism. in 2022.

Her work has been published in The Guardian, Gothamist, WNYC, WNET, Mashable, The Real Deal, and others.

Houghtaling was cofounder and editor of Protest_NYC with fellow alum Curtis Brodner ’19, for which they earned the Richard & Marylee Salomon Fund for Journalists Award in 2020.

She is the recipient of the Richard J. Blood Award for Excellence in Reporting and was nominated for a 2022 National Magazine Award.

Houghtaling held several positions while at Purchase, on and off campus, including at WNET New York Public Media, the Daily Voice, the Journal News, the Gotham Gazette, GenFKD, WPSR, and the Purchase Phoenix, while also serving on campus as a peer mentor and president of the Literature Society.
