Anne M. Kern

Anne M. Kern is Dean for Global Strategy and International Programs, Director of the Center for Engagement, Associate Professor of Cinema Studies, and founder and former director of the Transnational Filmmaking Project at Purchase College.

Other initiatives founded by Dr. Kern include Purchase’s Global Scholars Program, and (T)HERE: A Global Festival of Arts, Culture and Ideas, an annual three day on campus event​.

She received her Honors B.A. at University of Wisconsin, Madison, her M.A. at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, and her M. Phil. and Ph.D. in Film Studies and Comparative Literature from Yale University. In 2018, the French government awarded Dr. Kern the rank of Chevalier in the Order of Arts and Letters, an order that honors individuals who have distinguished themselves by their creations in the fields of culture and communication or by the contribution they have made to the influence of the Arts and Letters in France and in the world.

Dr. Kern has published work on cinema, surrealism and psychoanalysis in venues ranging from Cinema Journal to Le Monde. She is Co-Chair of the Advisory Council for SUNY’s Global Learning for All Initiative and the former Director of Programming of the Focus on French Cinema Film Festival.  

Dr. Kern’s role in the project is two fold: she is both Principal Investigator and Project Director. In these capacities, she wrote the grant and is responsible for all aspects of the concept, shape and management of the overall program.
