Bienvenu Azéhoungbo

Bienvenu Azéhoungbo is an Assistant Professor (CAMES) at the Beninese Center for Foreign Languages of the University of Abomey-Calavi.

He received his master’s degree from the University of Franche-Comté in Besançon (France) in 2010 and defended his doctoral thesis in Sociolinguistics and Ethnolinguistics in 2016. He teaches sociolinguistics, language and literature Fon courses at the University of Abomey-Calavi. An active member of many research laboratories and of the National Commission for the Fon language, he is very attentive to issues related to African and Beninese languages and positions himself as a fervent defender of their use in the formal education system. As such, Azéhoungbo designed teaching materials for the primary education classes to Ecole et Langues (ELAN) project funded by the International Organization of La Francophonie (OIF) and the government of Benin from 2012 to 2018.

He has extensive experience working with colleagues in Benin and Francophone Africa. He was a key member of the TSEF Books that Bind program team where he acted as lead linguist to develop reading materials with storytelling in Aja, Baatonum, Dendi, Fon, French, Gun, and Yoruba for young people in Benin. Since October 2022, Dr. Azéhoungbo has held the position of Head of Department of French as a Foreign Language at the Beninese Center for Foreign Languages.
