Lyric Hounshell ’25

Lyric is a creative. She’s a writer, collage artist, and first year SUNY Purchase student studying the art of journalism. Lyric was born into an extremely creative family in Peekskill NY, but spent most of her life in Maryland. She began collaging her junior year of high school, in 2020, during the pandemic. Each piece she creates, mounted on canvas, paper or cardboard, composed of hand painted details; magazine cutouts, mixed media objects, and images she’s taken, highlights what it means to be black in America. Her works focus on the black life, experience, freedom, and success. Lyric’s works include different faces and shifts in size and scale, as well as variation in placement and integration of text; a key feature in all of her works is the use of symbolism and play on words as she explores the remnants of black ancestry through contemporary black culture.
