Financial Aid

If you currently receive financial aid, you may be able to apply your award to your study abroad program.*

Summer and winter term programs

Students must be registered for at least 6 SUNY credits over the summer to be eligible to apply for summer financial aid (loan and NYS TAP funding). Those 6+ credits could come from one SUNY study abroad program that is 6+ credits, or a combination of a study abroad program and a summer course that together meet the minimum required 6 credits.

Students do not receive additional loan or NYS TAP funding if they choose to apply it towards a summer program. Instead, a portion of money from their financial aid package is reallocated from their spring award and put towards their summer credits. Students should reach out to the Student Financial Services office if they are interested in pursuing this option. Visit the Student Financial Services Study Off-Campus page to learn more about your eligibility.

Excelsior Scholarship Funding cannot be used for summer terms.

Financial aid cannot be used towards programs in the winter term.

Exchange and SUNY semester programs

Students must be registered for at least 12 degree-applicable credits to be able to apply their financial aid to an exchange or semester program. Please contact Student Financial Services about your individual financial aid award. Visit the Student Financial Services Study Off-Campus page to learn more about your eligibility.

*Students will automatically be assessed for any Federal Pell Grant eligibility if they are registered for degree applicable credits.
