Art+Design: University of Fine Arts Hamburg

Students wishing to study at The University of Fine Arts Hamburg (HFBK) need to first be nominated by the School of Art+Design.

In this unique exchange program, a hand-picked group of art students from 14 different partner schools around the world, along with their HFBK student mentors, come together for a semester to make up The Art School Alliance (ASA). Participating exchange students are awarded a scholarship that covers the cost of housing and student fees in order to live and study in Hamburg.

The ASA program offers seminars on the theory and history of art, tutorials and cultural excursions to acquaint exchange students with other German cities and their museums. ASA courses are taught in English by HFBK professors. Additionally, students may take part in the classes of their HFBK mentors or register for other courses at HFBK; these courses are taught in English or German.

The combination of living and working in a new context promotes an intensive exchange of ideas and experiences for both local and international students. At the end of the semester, exchange students and their mentors hold a farewell exhibition entitled Open Studios. The Art School Alliance creates an international network for its students and graduates and helps them find a place in the global art scene.
