backstory: Just one more
Okay, yes, I know I said the last one was the last one. But I do have one more message, a bittersweet one: after twenty-two years of service to the Neuberger and to SUNY Purchase, I have decided to retire from SUNY and my positions as director of the Neuberger and as an associate professor in Art History.
My last day will be June 30, 2027.
Retiring? How can you be old enough to retire??? Thank you, if that’s what you were thinking (as were several of the few people in whom I’ve confided), but, yes, I actually am old enough to retire, at least from my work as a state employee.
To tell you the truth, I never imagined, after joining our campus in 2004, serving as a curator at the Neuberger, gaining tenure in 2010, being promoted to Chief Curator in 2012, becoming the Museum’s eighth director in 2014, and even serving for a short period of time as Interim Managing Director of The Performing Arts Center in 2020, that I would be writing to you twenty-two years later, but here I am and after a total of thirty-six years in the field, it’s time to expand my horizons and try some new things.
I will miss you all, especially the very special and extraordinary Neuberger Museum of Art folks with whom I have worked over the years, but it’s time.
So… for really the last time,
Be well,
And THANK YOU!
Tracy Fitzpatrick
