backstory: We lost a giant

The passing of artist Mel Edwards this week is a great loss for so many of us.

Melvin Edwards, Gate of Ogun, 1983 Melvin Edwards, Gate of Ogun, 1983At the Neuberger, the artist and his work are woven deeply into our past and present, from his first major survey in our galleries in 1993 to his ever-present sculpture Gate of Ogun at the main entrance to Purchase College’s academic plaza.

It is not hyperbole to say that his work changed how we think about art, and influenced generations of artists today.

A giant.

Our sympathies go to his family and friends.

Warmly,

Tracy Fitzpatrick
Director, Neuberger Museum of Art
