backstory: Behind the glass
Glazing—the use of glass or Plexiglas over a framed canvas—is sometimes just a necessary evil.
Recently, I had the opportunity to see our Marilyn Monroe out of its frame for the first time, and it was such a treat. Our registrar, Sophie Worley, kindly called me down to storage while the work was being examined, and I was able to spend a few quiet moments with it unglazed.
Without the glazing, the colors were richer and it was so much easier to see the brushstrokes. I found myself wishing that every work could be experienced this way, but some simply require that extra layer of protection.
