backstory: Proud mentor moment
I’ve mentored many people over the course of my career. And it’s always rewarding. Sometimes you’re teaching about how to behave in a meeting. Sometimes how to listen. Sometimes how to chew with your mouth closed (yes, that was a big mentoring item for me many years ago with a student).
Today, I’m so proud of our curatorial assistant, Rem Ribeiro, a graduate of Purchase College’s MA Program in Art History, Theory, and Criticism, for publishing for the first time. Her interview with Janet Langsam—a cultural advocate, artist, journalist, and seasoned arts executive who has been nurturing artists and bolstering the cultural infrastructure of our community for more than fifty years—is a great read.
Rem worked hand in hand with me to produce last year’s exhibition Janet Langsam: Improbable Feminist at the Museum. The show introduced the artist’s story through her work and her words; Rem’s interview with Janet further explores her childhood nostalgia, the Dada movement, unconventional techniques, the Women’s Liberation Movement, and what it means to “work on a larger canvas.” Accompanying the interview are images of works from the exhibition, along with several archival photographs.
Pick up a copy of the publication, titled Janet Langsam: Improbable Feminist, at the Museum, and spend some time with the interview in the section called Thoughts on Becoming an Artist.
Enjoy!
