backstory: Yto Barrada

What great news! Yto Barrada, the 2019 recipient of our Roy R. Neuberger Prize, has been selected to represent France at the 61st International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia in 2026.

In announcing her selection, the jury praised Barrada “for her multidisciplinary practice.” Many of you will remember the dramatic hand-dyed textiles—alongside sculpture, film, video, and photography—featured in the fall 2019 Neuberger Prize exhibition. Learn more about that show and the Prize here: Yto Barrada: The Dye Garden.

We are proud to have recognized Yto’s work early in her career and thrilled to see her continue to be honored for her creativity, vision, and contributions to shaping contemporary art today.

P.S. Yto’s most recent exhibition, Yto Barrada: Thrill, Fill and Spill, opened this weekend at the South London Gallery and will remain on view through mid-January 2026. If you find yourself in London this fall, try to see it.

P.P.S. In case you haven’t already heard this good news from Purchase, the College was recently named a Top 10 Public School by U.S. News & World Report!
