backstory: An important conversation
Some conversations feel especially important right now.
As we continue to see public support for the arts, education, and culture being quietly—sometimes not so quietly—chipped away, it’s more important than ever to listen to those who have spent their lives advocating for creative expression, civic responsibility, and public access.
This Friday, I’ll be joined by two such voices: Janet Langsam, an artist and longtime cultural leader whose current exhibition Improbable Feminist is on view here at the Neuberger, and New York State Senator Shelley Mayer, a passionate champion for public education, the arts, and civic life. One brings the lens of a working artist turned arts executive; the other, the perspective of a legislator deeply engaged in shaping public policy.
Together, we’ll explore how leadership, creativity, and courage show up in unexpected ways, and how art helps us imagine and build a more just and vibrant future. In moments like these, when the ground feels a little less stable, it’s the voices with vision and the stories they dare to tell that shape what comes next.
I hope you’ll join us.
