Brightspace Updates from D2L, November 2023

Several new features have been added to our instance of Brightspace.

Copying Announcements to Other Courses

An update to permissions was recently released that allows faculty to copy Announcements between courses. It is important to note that in its current state, the copied announcement will appear in the destination course as a draft announcement. However, in the December Brightspace update, which is slated to be released in just a few weeks, the ability to publish the Announcement in the destination course upon copy is being added to the feature. More information on copying Announcements from course to course.

Copying Assignments to Other Courses

A similar updated permission was also released to allow Assignment copying from course to course. During the copying of the Assignment, faculty will also have the option to copy a Rubric and the associated Grade Item (if either are present).

Deduction options for incorrect answers in Quizzes

A feature called “negative grading” has been released. This feature can be enabled for individual campuses. When enabled, instructors can set a quiz to deduct a percentage of a question’s point value for incorrect answers submitted. This feature applies specifically to question types that can be auto-graded, for example, multiple-choice and true or false questions. The only question type that can’t be auto-graded is written response. More information about deduction options for incorrect answers in Quizzes.

Full details on these features can be found in the November release notes.

A note about Brightspace updates

Brightspace uses a ‘Continuous Delivery’ model for monthly updates and SUNY is part of “Wave 3” on the update schedule. Please see the Wave Schedule for the date range of when an update will be deployed.
