Professor Jordan Schildcrout Interviewed on NY1

The dramaturg provides perspective on drag performance as the musical Kinky Boots returns to the stage.

Professor of Theatre and Performance Jordan Schildcrout recently appeared on NY1 to provide a historical perspective on drag as an art form on the occasion of the ground-breaking musical Kinky Boots’ return to the stage off-Broadway this month.

Hear Schildcrout discuss the origins of drag dating back to the ancient Greeks, Kabuki theater, and Shakespeare’s Elizabethan era, when male performers played female roles.

“When you think about it, the original Juliette, the original Lady Macbeth, would have been played by men in drag.”

Schildcrout has published scholarly articles on a range of subjects from the Stonewall Riots to the Muppets and is the co-editor of 50 Key Figures in Queer US Theatre (Routledge 2022).
