backstory: Welcome respite

I’ve had a cold the last couple of weeks—my first in a really long time. Caught it from my 12-year-old. Negative PCR, but it sure knocked me out. I guess being masked for so long has taken its toll on my (everyone’s?) ability to fend off the common cold.

It was a self-care wake-up call for me and one of the reasons I’m so glad the museum is continuing its Wellness Wednesday events. Introduced in 2019 when Threnody was on view and continuing virtually while the museum was closed, the short, guided meditations have become incredibly popular with students, faculty, staff, and members of our community. It’s so great to see these happening in person now, socially distanced and masked, in front of jewels from our collection like with Lesley Dill’s magnificent Rush. Earlier today, instructor Janelle Berger played her crystal singing bowls, filling the museum with soothing sounds and creating a space for quiet reflection. A welcome respite … and probably a really good way to try and not catch those 12-year-old sniffles.
