Humanities Renovation

The Humanities Building is now open for use.

The Humanities Building, located on the south side of the main plaza, is a 92,530 square foot structure constructed in 1973.

It houses all programs associated with the Humanities department, including journalism, literature, and history.

The building, which pre-dated changes in environmental health and safety regulations, energy conservation and ADA requirements, had not had a significant renovation since it was built.

Its spaces also had not been adapted to pedagogical developments that have taken place since 1973. The project addressed renovation of building interiors, mechanical/electrical/plumbing systems. It also included replacement of the existing windows.

The renovation included hazardous materials abatement and brought it into compliance with construction and accessibility codes.

The building now meets the requirements to achieve a LEED Silver rating.

The Program Study for the Humanities Building Renovation was commissioned by the State University Construction Fund and Purchase College to develop a program for the renovated building.

The purpose of the program study was to verify findings in the July 2008 Space Utilization Study conducted by Perkins Eastman and collect additional information to develop a final program for the renovated Humanities Building.
