backstory: Light and beacon

As 2021 unfolds in a rather confusing way, I’m looking forward to a brighter, better new year. Frankly, it can’t come soon enough.
At the Neuberger, we are getting closer to reopening (stay tuned for details) and have special projects on the horizon. First is the reinstallation of one of our signature objects, Neon Lintel (1997), a work by Stephen Antonakos. Dismantled in 2015 for campus construction, the site-specific piece has been conserved and will be reinstalled next month. For us, it is both the light at the end of the tunnel on the Purchase College campus and the beacon to welcome you back to the Neuberger.

Second, our NEU Kids Pack project was a great success. A very special thank you to everyone who helped us reach our goal to fund the initiative. We will soon begin filling backpacks with crayons, scissors, and other art supplies and projects for local, inner-city school children. With your help, we will be changing 200 young lives when those backpacks are delivered.

More soon. Be safe, be well.

Stephen Antonakos’s Neon Lintel was originally commissioned for the 1997 Neuberger Museum Biennial Exhibition of Public Art. Antonakos was one of the pioneers transforming the commercial technology of neon into a rich aesthetic medium. The simplicity of the works’ bright lines lends balance to the asymmetrical roofline as it aligns with the horizon.
