These webinars are free to SUNY campuses, and will be recorded.

Dr. Brian Beatty, a pioneer in the HyFlex movement, will kick off the week as keynote speaker. Then, in a series of targeted panel discussions, explore the lessons learned, challenges, and opportunities encountered in implementing this modality on SUNY campuses.

Panelists will include HyFlex-experienced SUNY campus administrators, IT/Learning Environment specialists, faculty, and faculty support personnel as well as those who are in the process of implementing the HyFlex Learning Model.

    Join this panel discussion to get a better understanding of the HyFlex learning model. Focus will center on effective framing of and campus communication about HyFlex; and effective supports for faculty and staff to promote institutional success.
  • December 2, 2020, 12:00-1:00pm: SUNY CIOs, IT Directors, and Learning Environment Specialists Panel
    Panelists will discuss how to determine the technological and classroom space requirements for effective HyFlex Learning Model implementation. The panel will explore a range of solutions from budget-conscious to high-end technologies to support institutional goals and budgets.
  • December 3, 2020, 12:00-1:00pm: HyFlex Faculty Panel
    Join a panel of SUNY faculty to discuss HyFlex Model implications for faculty including: expectations of faculty members in the design and delivery of HyFlex courses; what it takes to be an effective HyFlex instructor; and what institutional supports can help faculty reach their goals.
  • December 4, 2020, 12:00-1:00pm: Supporting HyFlex Faculty Panel
    This panel will focus on the best practices for supporting faculty in the development and delivery of HyFlex courses. Panelists will discuss both technical and pedagogical support for faculty, sharing materials and lessons learned along the way.

Keynote Speaker

Dr. Brian Beatty headshotDr. Brian Beatty is Associate Professor of Instructional Technologies in the Department of Equity, Leadership Studies and Instructional Technologies at San Francisco State University. Brian’s primary areas of interest and research include social interaction in online learning, flipped classroom implementation, and developing instructional design theory for Hybrid-Flexible learning environments. At SFSU, Dr. Beatty pioneered the development and evaluation of the HyFlex course design model for blended learning environments, implementing a “student-directed-hybrid” approach to better support student learning. Previously (2012 – 2020), Brian was Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs Operations at San Francisco State University (SFSU), overseeing the Academic Technology unit and coordinating the use of technology in the academic programs across the university. He worked closely with IT professionals and leaders in other units to coordinate overall information technology strategic management at SFSU. Prior to 2012, Brian was Associate Professor and Chair of the Instructional Technologies department in the Graduate College of Education at SFSU. He received his Ph.D. in Instructional Systems Technology from Indiana University Bloomington in 2002. Dr. Beatty also holds several CA single-subject teaching credentials, an M.A. in Instructional Technologies from SF State and a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Marquette University. Dr. Beatty has more than 25 years’ experience as a classroom teacher, trainer, and instructional designer at schools, businesses, and the US Navy.
