Fitzpatrick Appointed to Advisory Council on Museums

Tracy Fitzpatrick, Ph.D., Director of the Neuberger Museum of Art and Associate Professor of Art History, Purchase College, SUNY, has been appointed to the New York State Board of Regents Advisory Council on Museums.

Members of the Advisory Council on Museums are appointed by the Commission of Cultural Education with approval by the Board of Regents. Members offer advice and consultation on issues of policy and service pursuant to the Board’s statutory mandate to operate the New York State Museum in Albany and oversee museums across the State.

“I am honored by have been appointed to the New York State Board of Regents Advisory Council on Museums and am excited to work with my colleagues in museums across New York State to share what is happening in Westchester County, particularly here at the Neuberger Museum of Art, Purchase College, SUNY, and to learn about what other museums are doing across the State,” said Dr. Fitzpatrick.

“On behalf of the college, I congratulate Dr. Fitzpatrick on this appointment,” said Dennis Craig, Interim President of Purchase College, SUNY. “As the director of one of the largest teaching museums in the nation, she will be able to share unique insights and best practices on museum leadership and arts education for students as young as elementary school age, all the way through the graduate level.”

On the Purchase College faculty and in varying curatorial roles at the Neuberger since 2004, Dr. Fitzpatrick has combined curatorial work with curricular initiatives, organized exhibitions, and taught in the areas of modern art and museum studies. Exhibitions curated by Fitzpatrick include Romare Bearden: Abstraction (2017); American People, Black Light: Faith Ringgold’s Paintings of the 1960s (2010), and Hannah Wilke: Gestures (2008). Author of books and scholarly articles, she edited and was the main essayist for the Neuberger’s first permanent collection catalogue, When Modern Was Contemporary: The Roy R. Neuberger Collection (2014). Her book, Art and the Subway: New York Underground (Rutgers University Press) was released in May 2009.

Since 2014, Dr. Fitzpatrick has served as director of the Neuberger where she oversees the articulation and execution of the Neuberger’s strategic vision in collaboration with its Board of the Friends of the Neuberger Museum of Art and Purchase College, SUNY, in keeping with the museum’s mission. She also serves on the executive boards of the Association of Academic Museums and Galleries as Vice President for Programs, the SUNY Council of Museums and Galleries as Member-At-Large, and the Children’s Center at Purchase College as Vice Chair. Dr Fitzpatrick is also a member of the Association of Art Museum Directors, the American Alliance of Museums, the College Art Association, and ArtTable.


The Neuberger Museum of Art opened on the campus of Purchase College, State University of New York, in 1974 with a core collection donated by Roy R. Neuberger, one of the greatest private collectors, philanthropists, and arts advocates of the twentieth century. Today, critically acclaimed exhibitions, tours, lectures, and interactive programs for patrons of all ages make the Neuberger a center of teaching and learning for all stages of life.
