backstory: Where in the World is the Neuberger?

Denmark!
Or at least that’s where our work Marsden Hartley’s Fisherman’s Last Supper, Nova Scotia from 1940-41 is right now. The painting is included in the first major retrospective exhibition of the artist’s work in Europe in over 60 years, on view at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humblebaek. The exhibition features more than 110 works by the artist. It also features interviews about Hartley by contemporary artists including our second Neuberger Prize Winner, Dana Schutz.

Roy R. Neuberger purchased the painting in October 1943, just a month after Hartley died. As he recalled, “When I brought it home, I felt that I now had an American masterpiece.”

The show runs through January 19, 2020.
