Jazz Performers Inspired by Poetry

On Wednesday, April 10, an audience packed the Neuberger Museum of Art’s Center Gallery to hear jazz musicians interpret the poetry of Kevin Young.

Poetry in Sound, a combo comprised of Jazz students from the Conservatory of Music, composed pieces based on the poetry of Kevin Young and performed them as Young recited the poems.

Young, director of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture and poetry editor of the New Yorker, was this year’s Roy & ShirleyDurst Distinguished Chair in Literature.

Jazz performers:

  • Kareem Matcham, piano
  • Clayton Thompson, bass
  • John Hasselback, III, trumpet
  • Kendric McCallister, tenor saxophone
  • Joshua Simpson, drums
  • Samara McLendon, voice

All Durst Lectures are made possible by the Roy and Shirley Durst Distinguished Chair in Literature Endowment.
