Professor Paul Kaplan, Co-organizer of Conference at SAAM

Paul Kaplan, professor of art history, is co-organizer of the international conference, “The Course of Empire: American-Italian Cultural Relations, 1770–1980” taking place October 19–20, 2017, at the Smithsonian American Art Museum (SAAM) in Washington, D.C. The event, sponsored by the Terra Foundation for American Art, is the second of a two-part conference initiated last year with the symposium “Hybrid Republicanism: Italy and American Art, 1840–1918.” Professor Kaplan is a specialist in Renaissance art and representations of people of color in both European and American art, and has most recently published an essay titled “Marmorean Ball-Player: Sheriff John McNamee of Brooklyn and His Sculptural Career in Florence,” which appeared in Panorama.
