Precollege Programs: Songwriting & Intro to Music Production

9:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

Morning Sessions

Each day begins with a Lyric Lab and Music Lab. In the Lyric Lab, students engage in creative writing exercises designed to flex their writing muscles and explore new poetic perspectives. In the Music Lab, they explore the building blocks of music: harmony, melody, and rhythm and immediately apply them through musical writing exercises. These sessions give students a clear understanding of songwriting tools, helping them build the foundational layers of their original compositions, gain confidence in musical storytelling, and get into the flow of creating.

12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Lunch

Weather permitting, students have the opportunity to enjoy lunch outdoors with their instructors, soaking in the beauty of the Purchase College campus, connecting with fellow musicians, and recharging their energy before heading into the afternoon labs.

1:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Afternoon Sessions

The afternoon focus shifts to Production, Songwriting, and Performance Lab. Working individually or in groups, students move into digital workstations to record audio, arrange MIDI, and explore sound design within a DAW. This time is divided between developing personal projects and preparing for the final showcase. Students gain hands-on experience with recording and mixing software while simultaneously rehearsing their material for the stage. This collaborative process ensures that their creative vision evolves from a song idea into a polished track and a live performance.

•  Purchase College does not supply instruments—other than piano—for the Songwriting and Intro to Music Production.
• Students are welcome to bring their own instruments for personal use in the class.
• The School of Continuing Education does not offer overnight storage and cannot assume responsibility for any instruments brought to campus.

• Students are encouraged to bring their own laptop if they have one, though it is not strictly required. This will allow them to work on their projects both in class and at home.

The program culminates in a showcase where students perform for peers, friends, and family.”

Students finish the program with a recorded demo of their original song—something they can share with friends, post online, or keep as a lasting record of their achievement.
