Campus Fire Evacuation Procedures

In the Event of Fire Alarm Signal:

  • Evacuate the building. Follow the exit signs. Important: Do not use elevators. 

  • Exit at a normal pace and proceed to the designated safe assembly area outside of the building. 
(Assembly Area should be at least 50 feet away from the building entrance/exit) 

  • Wait at the designated safe assembly area until the University Police Department announces “All Clear” 
to return inside of the building. 

  • Report missing persons and their possible locations to emergency personnel.


If You Discover a Fire or Smoke Condition: 


  • Pull the fire alarm to alert everyone. Pull boxes are usually located at stairway doors and building exits. 

  • Evacuate the building and follow the exit signs, Important: Do not use elevators. 

  • Report the incident to the University Police by dialing #6911 (from a campus phone) or 914.251.6911
.
  • Report to emergency personnel any first-hand information you have. 

  • If comfortable doing so; (a) Confine the fire by closing all doors, where and when possible (b) use a fire extinguisher to extinguish small fires.
  • Remember P.A.S.S.: Pull the pin, Aim at the base of fire, Squeeze the handle, Sweep side to side until the fire extinguisher is empty. Do not turn your back on the fire, carefully back away after the extinguisher is empty.


Evacuation Procedure for Individuals With Disabilities (I.W.D.): 


Please note information regarding students who self-identified with the College as requiring assistance in an emergency is shared with the College’s emergency personnel. 


  • In the event of a fire alarm or an emergency evacuation event individuals with disabilities (I.W.D.) should proceed to 
the nearest area of refuge (usually the nearest stairwell).  Important: Do not use elevators. 

  • Individuals who are able to negotiate stairs with or without minor assistance should do so when evacuation is 
required.
  • Individuals should use caution when negotiating the stairwells. 

  • Individuals who are not able to negotiate stairs should remain in the area of refuge (usually the nearest stairwell) 
and call the University Police Department at #6911 (from a campus phone) or 914.251.6911 to report your 
location. 

  • If comfortable doing so individuals; (a) may escort (do not carry or lift!) the I.W.D. to the nearest area of refuge 
(usually the nearest stairwell), (b) and report the location of the I.W.D. to the University Police #6911 (from a campus phone) or 914.251.6911

Proper Type of Fire Extinguisher:


A.B.C. Fire Types:

  • Class A Fire: Wood, Paper, Plastic;
  • Class B Fire: Oil, Grease, Flammables; and
  • Class C Fire: Electrical


P.A.S.S.:

  1. Pull the pin
  2. Aim at base of fire
  3. Squeeze handle
  4. Sweep side-to-side

Report any discharged fire extinguisher to Facilities at #6920 (from a campus phone) or 914.251.6920 for replacement.
